Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Πωγωνάτος.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek Πωγωνάτος bearded, an epithet of the emperor Constans II (died 668) < ancient Greek πώγων beard (see pogonology n.) + -άτος, suffix forming adjectives.In the 19th cent. many scholars identified Constantine IV (died 685) as Constantine Pogonatos; Constans II was his father. In quot. 1871 apparently confused with the emperor Constantine I.
Obsolete.
Bearded. (Only as an epithet of the emperor Constantine.)
