1. A milky liquid made from ground hickory nuts, used as a beverage or condiment. Now historical and rare.

1896 P. A. Bruce Econ. Hist. Virginia in 17th Cent. I. 167 The aborigines gathered a great abundance of hickory nuts, and placing them in mortars into which water had been poured, pounded shell and kernel until a milky liquor, known as pohickory, had been made.
1900 Atlantic Monthly Jan. 63/1 I would give all the pohickory that was ever brewed by heathen for a toss of aqua vitæ!
1908 E. R. Emerson Beverages II. xvii. 455 The method used by the Indians in making pohickory was to pound the nut, shells and kernels, in a mortar with a proper amount of water until a milky liquor was produced.
1999 A. Davidson Oxf. Compan. Food 615/2 Governor's Island in the upper New York Bay was famous for its hickory nuts, which were of the shellbark kind and well suited to making pohickory.
