γ. late Middle English poldavyt.

Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pouldavid.
Etymology: Apparently < Pouldavid, the name of a hamlet on the south side of Douarnenez Bay, on the west coast of Brittany.About 1548 a warrant for £70 11s. was issued to pay for bringing over to England certain Bretons to teach the art of making poldavies ( M. Oppenheim Hist. Admin. Royal Navy (1896) 98, 103). In β forms apparently originally a collective plural, but chiefly construed as singular. The forms Poll Davy, Poll Davies, Powle Davies apparently show folk-etymological reanalysis as a personal name. Apparently attested earlier in the following, although it is unclear whether it should be taken as showing the Middle English word or an (otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman parallel:c1300 in P. Studer Oak Bk. Southampton (1911) II. 16 De qualibet pecia de poldavis.
Now historical and rare.
A coarse canvas or sacking, originally woven in Brittany and formerly much used for sailcloth.
