Etymology: < poikilo- comb. form + thermic adj., after German pökilotherm, adjective (now poikilotherm ; C. Bergmann 1847, in Göttinger Studien (Math. u. Naturwissensch. Abhandl.) I. 613). Compare slightly earlier poikilothermal adj.
Zoology and Physiology.
Having a body temperature that changes in response to ambient temperature; displaying poikilothermy, cold-blooded. Opposed to homoeothermic. Cf. ectothermic adj.
