Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: Latin plūrātīvus.

Etymology: < classical Latin plūrātīvus (adjective) plural (Gellius) < plūr- , plūs more + -ātīvus -ative suffix, after grammatical terms in -ātīvus , as nōminātīvus nominative adj., comparātīvus comparative adj., etc. In later use in sense 1 chiefly after German Plurativ, noun ( W. Krause Das Numerussystem des Tocharischen (1954) 2; compare quot. 1962¹ at sense 1). Compare Middle French, French pluratif (late 14th cent. in sense 1 in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from 1960).
