Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: Latin plūrātīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin plūrātīvus (adjective) plural (Gellius) < plūr- , plūs more + -ātīvus -ative suffix, after grammatical terms in -ātīvus , as nōminātīvus nominative adj., comparātīvus comparative adj., etc. In later use in sense 1 chiefly after German Plurativ, noun ( W. Krause Das Numerussystem des Tocharischen (1954) 2; compare quot. 19621 at sense 1). Compare Middle French, French pluratif (late 14th cent. in sense 1 in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from 1960).
1. Grammar. = plural adj. 1. Also as n. rare.In later use also occasionally used to designate various forms, affixes, etc., found in certain languages, which confer or partake of some of the properties associated with plurality.
