Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French plurifier ; pluri- comb. form, -ify suffix.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French plurifier (c1350) < post-classical Latin plurificare to multiply (11th cent.) < classical Latin plūr- , plūs more (see plus prep., n., adv., and adj.) + -ficāre -fy suffix. In later use probably < pluri- comb. form + -ify suffix.
