Etymology: < plus prep. + four n.The name seems to have arisen among cloth-cutters working for the tailors who first made the garment, as a purely descriptive term, four additional inches of fabric being added to the length of ordinary knickerbockers to produce the characteristic overhang. It is apparently unconnected with the use of plus with a numeral to indicate a golfer's handicap, although this is attested earlier, compare:1901 Times 3 May 12/3 Mr. D. F. Ransom..was second in the handicap from plus four.1902 Times 5 May 14/3 [He] did a wonderful round, and his plus four only made him six down.

In plural. Full, baggy men's knickerbockers, of a style formerly worn generally (and esp. for field sports), but now chiefly for golf.
