单词 polemonium
释义

Polemoniumn.

Brit. /ˌpɒlᵻˈməʊnɪəm/, U.S. /ˌpɑləˈmoʊniəm/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Polemonium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Polemonium (14th cent. in a British source; compare classical Latin polemōnia , an unidentified plant (Pliny)) < Hellenistic Greek πολεμώνιον , an unidentified plant < Πολέμων , proper name ( < πόλεμος war: see polemic adj. and n.) + -ιον , suffix forming nouns (compare -y suffix4), or, according to Pliny, directly < πόλεμος war. Compare:1836 J. C. Loudon Encycl. Plants (rev. ed.) 132 Polemonium. Pliny relates, that the plant which he called by this name received its appellation from having been the cause of a war between two kings, who could not agree which of them first discovered its virtues... Its name has descended to a flower which ornaments the garden, but which preserves nothing of the virtue of its progenitor.
The type genus of the family Polemoniaceae, comprising annual and perennial herbaceous plants native to America, Asia, and Europe, many of which are cultivated for their single and clustered bell-shaped flowers; (also polemonium) a plant of this genus (cf. Jacob's ladder n. 1).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 162, after J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 146.
