Etymology: < the name of Plymouth (see Plymouth n.) + brethren, plural of brother n., so named on account of the movement's early associations with Plymouth in Devon.

A Protestant Christian religious movement originally formed in Dublin in the 1820s and established in Plymouth c1830, recognizing no official order of ministers, and having no formal creed. Cf the Brethren at brother n. 8b.The beliefs of the Plymouth Brethren generally include premillennialism and dispensationalism and some aspects of Calvinism. In 1849 the movement split into two wings (see Exclusive Brethren n. at exclusive adj. and n. Additions and Open Brethren n. at open adj. Compounds 3). In popular usage the name Plymouth Brethren tends to be associated with characteristics of the former, more rigorous, group.
