Forms: 1900s– plyometrics, 2000s– pliometrics (rare).
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian pliometričeskij.
Etymology: Apparently < Russian pliometričeskij, adjective (Z. M. Compare later plyometric adj.The first element of Russian pliometričeskij is probably < pli- (in classical Latin plicāre : see plicate v.) + Russian -o- -o- connective. Ancient Greek πλείων , πλεῖον (see pleio- comb. form and compare plio- comb. form) has also been suggested. The form plyometrics is perhaps influenced by ply v.1 In the body of the article whose title is quoted in quot. 1975 the word occurs in singular form:1975 Athletic Jrnl.
