Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish plámás.
Etymology: < Irish plámás (18th cent.), variant or alteration of †blámás , in the same sense (1662 or earlier, probably < English blancmange n.), perhaps influenced in form by plás flattery, (formerly also) falsehood, deceit (probably < English fallace n.).With the proposed semantic development compare blancmange n. c and also flummery n. 2 (although both are apparently first attested later than the Irish word); quot. 1790 at blancmange n. c is from an Irish writer.
