Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πνεῖν , -o- connective.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πνεῖν (uncontracted πνέειν ) to blow, to breathe (see pneuma n.) + -o- connective. Compare French pnéo- (formations in which are found from at least the second half of the 19th cent.), German Pneo- (formations in which are found from at least the first half of the 19th cent.). Compare pneumo- comb. form, pneumato- comb. form.Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin. Found earliest in the mid 19th cent. in pneobiomantia n., an adaptation from German. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pnīˌo, nīˌo) /pniːəʊ/ /niːəʊ/.

1888 Lancet 13 Oct. 724/1 A Pocket Clinical Pneograph. This instrument, devised by Dr. Mortimer-Granville and manufactured by Mr. Weiss, consists essentially of a delicately suspended and counterpoised semi-disk [etc.]... The tracing of the pneograph shows the expiration by a more or less vertical line, the duration of the expiratory effort being indicated by the length of the line traced by the needle before it descends, at the moment when inspiration commences.
