Etymology: < classical Latin pollicitāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of pollicitārī to promise (assiduously) < pollicērī to offer, bid, to promise ( < por- forward ( < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of pro- pro- prefix1) + licērī to bid at an auction: see licitate v.) + -itāre -itate suffix. Compare earlier pollicitation n.
