Origin: A borrowing from Tibetan. Etymon: Tibetan polo.
Etymology: < Balti Tibetan polo ball (cognate with Lhasa Tibetan pulu , Lhodra Tibetan poli , Dzongkha bôli ) < English ball (see ball n.1).
1. A team game resembling hockey, played on horseback with long-handled mallets and a wooden or plastic ball.The game was developed in Persia (although probably first played in China) and is described in the Shāhnāma of the Persian poet Firdawsi in c1010. It survived in the mountainous regions of the Indus valley and in Manipur, and was popularized in the English speaking world in the mid to late 19th cent. after British Army officers began to hold organized matches in the 1850s. It was first played in England in 1871.
