Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek πόλος , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πόλος axle (see pole n.2) + -oid suffix, after French polhodie, polodie, noun (see polhode n.). Compare serpoloid n. With use as noun compare slightly later polhode n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōu·loid) /ˈpəʊlɔɪd/.
