单词 polonese
释义

Polonesen.adj.

Brit. /ˌpɒləˈniːz/, U.S. /ˌpɑləˈniz/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1600s– Polonese, 1700s polanees (in sense A. 2), 1700s Polaneese (in sense A. 2), 1700s Polenese, 1700s polonees (in sense A. 2), 1700s Poloneze.
Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Polonois n.; French polonais.
Etymology: Either a variant of Polonois n. with alteration of the ending after words in -ese suffix, or independently < French polonais, †polonois Polonois n. (compare -ese suffix). With use as adjective compare polonois adj. and its etymon French polonais , †polonois , adjective. Compare Spanish polonés (c1550; also polonés , adjective (1783 or earlier)), Portuguese polonês (1656 as polones , polonez ). Compare earlier Polonian n., Polan n. With use as adjective compare earlier Polonish adj., Polonian adj.1The following quots. could be interpreted as earlier use of this word; they are, however, more likely to show an earlier borrowing < post-classical Latin Poloni Poles (see polony adj. and n.2; compare also Spanish †polones , plural (a1457 or earlier)):1532 L. Cox Art or Crafte Rhetoryke sig. E.iii So to Englysshmen is attributed sumptuousnes in meates & drinkes... To Britayns Gascoignes and Polones larrecine.1577 R. Willes & R. Eden tr. Peter Martyr of Angleria Hist. Trauayle W. & E. Indies 299 They [sc. Moscouites] vse also beere and ale, as doe the Germanes and Polones. With sense A. 1b compare French en polonois (1782 or earlier; compare earlier langage Polonois (1540 in Middle French)). Compare earlier Polish n.1 1. In sense A. 2 after French polonaise (see polonaise n.). Compare slightly later polonaise n. 2a. In this sense frequently in plural; it is uncertain whether forms such as polonees , polanees , polaneese show unmarked plural forms, or whether they imply analogical singular forms *polonee , *polanee (compare also note at polonaise n.). A number of other alterations of this word or of polonaise n. 2a are also found in the 18th cent. in North America, e.g.:1755 Boston Evening Post 24 Nov. 4/2 (advt.) Just imported from London..Cardinals and polances, cloaks and hats.1758 Pennsylvania Gaz. 30 Mar. 3/3 (advt.) To be sold..coloured Prussian pillareens, black, blue, green and white Polonese cloaks, gimped and laced.1758 Boston Evening Post 25 Sept. 4/2 (advt.) To be sold..Colour'd pallances, dauphiness cloaks, black sattin hats.
