单词 portance
释义

portancen.

Forms: 1500s portaunce, 1500s–1800s portance.
Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: port n.4, -ance suffix; port v.2, -ance suffix; French portance.
Etymology: Apparently either < port n.4 + -ance suffix, or < port v.2 + -ance suffix, or < Middle French portance (French portance) action of carrying (14th cent.), support, favour (15th cent.), or < Old Occitan portança bearing, behaviour (14th cent.). Compare post-classical Latin portancitas (c1372 in a British source). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōə·ɹtăns) /ˈpɔətəns/.
Chiefly poetic. Obsolete.
Carriage, bearing, demeanour (= port n.4 1); conduct, behaviour.
