Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin portatilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin portatilis that may be carried (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin portāt- , past participial stem of portāre port v.2 + -ilis -ile suffix. Compare Middle French portatile (1532 in an apparently isolated attestation).With cross portatile (see quot. 1587 at sense 1) compare post-classical Latin crux portatilis (late 12th cent. in a British source). With portatile altar (see quotations 1692 at sense 2, 1845 at sense 2) compare post-classical Latin altare portatilis (1257 in a British source). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōə·ɹtătil, -təil) /ˈpɔətətɪl/, /ˈpɔətətaɪl/.
