1. pneumic acid n. Biochemistry (now rare or disused) an acid supposed to be present in the lung and to be involved in the conversion of sodium bicarbonate to carbon dioxide.

1866 H. Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 685 Pneumic acid, an acid existing, according to Verdeil,..in the parenchyma of the lungs of most animals. It is very soluble in water.

1899 A. H. Smith in Twentieth Cent. Pract. XVI. 44 But when the functional circulation ceases, the sodium bicarbonate is no longer at hand to neutralize the pneumic acid.

1905 Lancet 28 Jan. 254/1 Some have supposed that this acid in the pneumonic lung is secreted by the pulmonary tissues and have termed it pneumic acid.
