Biochemistry (now rare or disused) an acid supposed to be present in the lung and to be involved in the conversion of sodium bicarbonate to carbon dioxide. ΚΠ 1861 J. C. Dalton Treat. Human Physiol. 40 There are also certain substances which make their appearance in the living body, both of animals and vegetables, and which cannot be formed elsewhere; such as fibrin, albumen, casein, pneumic acid, the biliary salts, morphine, &c. 1866 H.
