Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ποῖος , -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ποῖος of what kind or nature ( < the same Indo-European base as who pron. and n. + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives; corresponding in sense to classical Latin quālis) + -logy comb. form.
Philosophy. rare.
In Jeremy Bentham's terminology: the branch of philosophy which deals with matter in respect of quality rather than quantity. Cf. posology n. 2.
