Origin: Partly formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: French poisour , peisour ; poise v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 either < Anglo-Norman poisour (1393–4 or earlier; variant of peisour peiser n.), or < poise v. + -er suffix1. In later senses < poise v. + -er suffix1.
1. A person who weighs something; spec. an officer appointed to weigh goods (cf. peiser n. 1). Also figurative. Obsolete.
