Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pochette.
Etymology: < French pochette small violin (although this is apparently first attested later: 1700), handbag, especially one without a handle or shoulder-strap (1899), small pocket (early 19th cent.), specific senses of pochette (see pocket n.). Senses 1, 2a, and 2b each show independent borrowing from French.
