Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acrania.
Etymology: < scientific Latin acrania (1821 or earlier) < classical Latin a- a- prefix6 + post-classical Latin cranium cranium n. + classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare French acrânie (1817 or earlier), German Acranie (1820 or earlier).
Medicine.
Total or partial absence of the skull, occurring as a congenital malformation; an instance of this.
