Henriques Jamaica x. 187 Pocomania leaders in the island inform me that the name was given to adherents of the cult by its enemies, and that it is derived from the Spanish meaning little mania. The original form may be presumed to have been closer to the α. forms. Poccomeea , Puccomina , and Puck-co-myal are recorded in a list collected locally in 1943 (see F. G. Cassidy and R. B. Le Page Dict. Jamaican Eng. (1967), s.v.), the last showing assimilation to myal adj.1 The spelling Pukkumina is generally preferred in scholarly writing. Derivation of the first two syllables from Twi po to shake or tremble and kɔ̀m to dance wildly in a state of frenzy, and alternatively of the second and third syllables from the etymon of Kumina n., has been suggested; Kongo pukumana to shake, to cause to shiver or tremble has also been compared.
