Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin polycephalus , -ous suffix; Greek πολυκέϕαλος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polycephalus (a1600) and its etymon ancient Greek πολυκέϕαλος many-headed ( < πολυ- poly- comb. form + -κέϕαλος : see -cephalous comb. form) + -ous suffix.Compare the following example of post-classical Latin Polycephali (plural) in an English context:1611 L. Andrewes Serm. White-hall 24 Mar. 20 They, that would ioine, but would bee Polycephali, haue a Consistory of heads, many heads: as many as the Beast of Babylon.
