Etymology: < post-classical Latin polychrestum thing adapted to several different uses (see below) < Hellenistic Greek πολύχρηστον , use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek πολύχρηστος useful for many purposes < πολυ- poly- comb. form + χρηστός useful (see chrestomathy n.). Compare French polychreste (1680). With the post-classical Latin word compare: 1623 F. Bacon De Dignitate & Augmentis Scientiarum Contents sig.
