Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian pud″.
Etymology: < Old Russian pud″ (Russian pud ; 12th cent. in sense ‘measure of weight of salt and honey’), probably < Old Icelandic pund unit of weight (see pound n.1), or perhaps < German regional (Low German) pund unit of weight (see pound n.1).
Now chiefly historical.
A Russian unit of weight, equal to 40 funt (Russian pounds) and equivalent to 16.4 kg (36 lb) approx.
