Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish púcán.
Etymology: < Irish púcán, of uncertain origin; compare -án, suffix forming diminutives.Treated by P. S. Dinneen ( Irish-Eng. Dict. (1927) 864) as the same word as púcán pouch, small bag < púca , apparently a variant of póca poke n.1 + -án (see above). Dinneen also records a form bád púcáin. The plural form pucain is after the Irish plural púcáin.
Irish English.
A small fishing boat which can be either rowed or sailed, having a single mast with a dipping lug sail. Cf. hooker n.2 2.
