Etymology: < classical Latin praetexta toga with a purple border, use as noun (short for toga praetexta) of past participle feminine of praetexere to fringe, border (see pretex v.). Compare French prétexte (c1355 in Middle French as pretexte ). Compare pretext n.2Compare the following quot., showing an unassimilated loan of the Latin accusative singular form:1701 tr. P. Gautruche Poet. Hist. Roman History.
A toga with a purple border, originally the distinguishing garment of a magistrate (also sometimes of a priest), but later also of a boy until entitled to the toga virilis, and of a girl until her marriage. See also toga praetexta at toga n. a and toga virīlis at toga n. a.
