Etymology: < classical Latin praetōriānus of or belonging to the praetorian cohorts, soldier of the praetorian cohorts < praetōrium praetorium n. + -ānus -an suffix. Sometimes translating classical Latin praetōrius of or belonging to a commander (see praetorial adj.).
