Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Latin domus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + classical Latin domus home (see dome n.) + -ous suffix. Compare monodomous adj.
Chiefly Entomology.
Of a colony of social hymenoptera, esp. ants: occupying several nests. Of a population or species: consisting of such colonies. Also, of any other animal: occupying different locations at different times (rare). Cf. monodomous adj.

1905 Science 1 Dec. 707/2 A single colony of ants may be confined to a single nest, in which case it has been called monodomous by Forel, or it may extend over several nests, in which case it is polydomous.
