Etymology: < scientific Latin Polygala, genus name (see polygala n.) + -ic suffix, after French polygalique (in acide polygalique polygalic acid: J. A. Quevenne 1836, in Jrnl. de pharm. 22 460), itself after German Polygalsäure (J. Peschier 1821, in Repert. Pharm. 11 163; also as Polygalasäure (J. A. Quevenne 1836, in Ann. der Pharmacie 20 36)).
