Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek γλῶσσα , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek γλῶσσα tongue (see gloss n.1) + -y suffix3. Compare French polyglossie multilingualism (1915 or earlier, rare). Compare -glossia comb. form, and later polyglossia n.
Linguistics.
The coexistence of two or more languages in one area or situation. Cf. polyglossia n.
