Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -merous comb. form.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -merous comb. form. Compare ancient Greek πολυμερής consisting of many parts, manifold. Compare also scientific Latin Polymera, genus name of dipteran flies ( C. R. G. Wiedemann Diptera exotica (1821) 40; compare French polymère (1842)) and scientific Latin Polymerus, genus name of heteropteran bugs (C. W. Hahn 1831, in Die wanzenartigen Insecten I. 27).
