Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Polynoe , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Polynoe, genus name ( M. Savigny Système des annélides (1809); < Greek Πολυνόη: see note) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Polynoidae, family name (1883 or earlier).Greek Πολυνόη is recorded in some 15th- and 16th-cent. manuscripts and in 16th-cent. editions of Apollodorus Bibliotheca 1. 2. 7 as the name of one of the Nereids or sea nymphs of Greek mythology, where modern editions have Hellenistic Greek Πολυνόμη; the variant reading may have been influenced by Hellenistic Greek πολύνοος (contracted πολύνους) thoughtful.
