Etymology: < Russian polyn′ja unfrozen area of water amidst ice (1639 in Old Russian), probably ultimately < polyj hollow, open.The plural form polynyi is after the Russian plural form.
An area of open water in the middle of an expanse of sea ice, esp. in Arctic waters.
