Etymology: < the name of Poor Robin (see note below) < poor adj. + robin n.¹ Compare earlier Poor-Robin v.The name Poor Robin appears in a ballad of 1641 and was subsequently used as a pseudonym by William Winstanley (d. 1698), who issued many publications as ‘Poor Robin’, including a series of almanacs, the first of which appeared in 1662. A number of almanacs appeared under this name after Winstanley's death; from 1777 they appeared under the name Old Poor Robin.
