Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative of the bird's call. Compare earlier (with different sense) whippoorwill n.
More fully common poorwill. A small white-throated nightjar of western North America, Phalaenoptilus nuttallii, which is the only bird known to hibernate regularly in cold weather. Also (chiefly with distinguishing word): any of several similar nightjars of related genera occurring in Central and South America.
