Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, pharmacy n.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + pharmacy n., after ancient Greek πολυϕάρμακος (see polypharmacal adj.).
Medicine.
The use of multiple drugs or medicines for several concurrent disorders (now esp. by elderly patients), often with the suggestion of indiscriminate, unscientific, or excessive prescription. Cf. polydrug adj.
