Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πολύϕωνος , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πολύϕωνος having many tones (see polyphonous adj.) + -al suffix1. Compare earlier antiphonal adj. and (in different sense) phonal adj. Compare also earlier polyphonic adj., polyphonical adj., polyphonous adj., and polyphonian adj.
