Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French porphyre.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †porphyre (1532 in Rabelais), apparently < post-classical Latin porphyrius (although this is first attested later: see quot. 1584) < ancient Greek πορϕύρεος (adjective) purple < πορϕύρα (noun) purple (see purpure n. and adj.) + -εος, suffix forming adjectives.
Obsolete.
A purple snake (not identified).
