Etymology: < classical Latin porphyriōn-, porphyriō a kind of waterfowl, probably the purple gallinule (Pliny) < ancient Greek πορϕυρίων < πορϕύρα purple (see purpure n. and adj.), so called on account of its red beak and feet. Compare Middle French porphire (1380), porphirio (1562; French porphyrion, †porphirion), Italian porfirione (a1498).
