Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: porphyry n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < porphyr- (in porphyry n.) + -oid suffix. Compare French porphyroïde (noun) a rock containing feldspar crystals (J.-C. Delamétherie Théorie de la terre(1795) II. 18).
