Etymology: < post-classical Latin portitor doorkeeper (in an undated glossary; from 12th cent. or earlier in British sources), perhaps representing a transferred use of classical Latin portitor customs officer ( < portus port n.1 + -tor , suffix forming agent nouns: see -or suffix), or perhaps re-formed < classical Latin porta port n.3 + -tor (see -or suffix).With Portitor of the Great Wardrobe, Portitor to the Great Wardrobe compare post-classical Latin Portitor Magne Garderobe (1573 in a British source).
Obsolete.
