Etymology: < scientific Latin Polyporus, genus name ( P. A. Micheli Nova plantarum genera (1729) 129) < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek πόρος (see pore n.¹). Compare Hellenistic Greek πολύπορος having many passages. Compare polyporous adj., and (with sense 1) polypore n.

1. Mycology. A large, widely distributed genus of hymenomycetous fungi of the family Polyporaceae, comprising chiefly bracket fungi growing on dead or living wood; (also polyporus) a fungus belonging to or formerly included in this genus.
