Etymology: < poly- comb. form + somatic adj.; compare Hellenistic Greek πολυσώματος having many bodies. In senses 1a and 2 after German polysomatisch ( G. Tschermak Die mikroskop. Beschaffenheit der Meteoriten (1885) i. 12, in sense 1a; O. F. I. Langlet 1927, in Svensk bot. tidskr. 21 3, in sense 2). With sense 1b compare polysomatism n. 2. Compare monosomatic adj.
