Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin polyspermus; Greek πολύσπερμος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyspermus (1686 or earlier) or its etymon ancient Greek πολύσπερμος abounding in seed (see polyspermous adj.). Compare French polysperme (1778; < post-classical Latin).Polysperm as a noun in various dictionaries is an error due to a misinterpretation of Evelyn (quot. 1729).
