Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Greek πολυσύνθετος , -ic suffix; poly- comb. form, synthetic adj.
Etymology: Either < Hellenistic Greek πολυσύνθετος much compounded, also (of words) with many elements, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Aristophanes Frogs844 ( < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + σύνθετος put together, compounded: see synthetic adj.) + -ic suffix, or directly < poly- comb. form + synthetic adj.
1. Crystallography. Consisting of or characterized by a series of twin crystals united so as to form a laminated structure.
