Etymology: Shortened either < Pommy n. (although this is first attested slightly later), or directly < pomegranate n. (see sense 5 at that entry).Alternative explanations of the word as an initialism (e.g. Permit of Migration) are not supported by evidence; those with reference to transportation (e.g. Prisoner of her Majesty) are also unlikely on chronological grounds.
