Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French pome de orange.

Etymology: Apparently ultimately < Anglo-Norman pome de orange meatball (beginning of the 14th cent. as pome de orage ), apparently a transferred use of Anglo-Norman and Middle French pomme d'orange orange (see orange n.¹ and adj.¹). In α. forms apparently altered by association with dory adj. Compare Middle French dorëures de pommeaulx, dorures de pommeaulx meatballs (c1393 in apparently isolated use).

Cookery. Obsolete.

A meat ball or rissole, esp. one with a glazing of egg yolk; (also) a dish made of such meatballs. Cf. pome n.¹ 3.
